Going Healthy - Going Smoke-Free

As the Housing Authority of the County of San Bernardino strives for residents to reach self-sufficiency, it is also concerned for the health and well-being of all residents. Therefore, the Housing Authority has transitioned several of their affordable housing sites to 100% smoke-free apartment complexes; these include: Waterman Gardens Apartments (San Bernardino), Parkside Pine Apartments (Colton), Mt. Vernon Manor Senior Apartments (Colton), Yucaipa Crest Senior Apartments (Yucaipa), Vista Del Sol Apartments (Redlands), and the Brockton Apartments (Redlands).

Surveys were distributed and collected from residents, and the overwhelming majority supported the idea of a 100% smoke free housing community meaning no smoking is allowed inside the units or anywhere on the premises of the properties. The policy changes were voted upon the Housing Authority Board of Commissioners.

Why is this policy important? Tobacco smoke has been proven to be a Toxic Air Contaminant and no level of exposure is a safe level of exposure. Approximately 500,000 Americans die annual from smoking and secondhand smoke exposure including children and infants. Secondhand smoke is a serious health issue and research proves that no level of exposure to smoke is safe, especially for children and elderly individuals. Smoke travels through plumbing, electrical systems, cabinets and closets, ceiling fans, fireplaces, ventilation systems and under doors, even if they are closed. Exposing yourself and your family to smoke, increases the risk of lung cancer, heart disease, asthma, bronchitis, and other chronic illnesses.
