Landlord Fraud Alert

There are persons posing as Housing Authority employees, calling with a phone number that shows up on the ID as a Housing Authority phone number; however, these individuals are using a mobile-app to mask their phone number with a legitimate Housing Authority number.

They may say something along these lines: "you missed the mandatory landlord meeting and in order to remain/become a Section 8 landlord or receive the housing assistance payment you have to buy the landlord manual".  They will try to get your credit card information to "pay for the manual". They may try to provide information to you to 'prove who they are', that you might think only the Housing Authority could have. In fact there is a wealth of information about property owners that is public access through sites such as the Assessor's office and the Internal Revenue Service site, among other less legitimate data collection sites.

Please DO NOT give someone posing as a Housing Authority employee your credit card information and ignore any story they tell you.  The Housing Authority DOES NOT charge landlords for information about or participation in any of our programs.

If you get contacted by one of these callers please call Ines Work, HACSB Housing Services Manager with the Program Integrity Unit at (909) 890-5305 and report your experience.

Updated Fraud Alert: Various Fraudulent Services Continue to Mislead Families Seeking Housing Assistance

Several fraudulent websites are charging prospective Housing Choice Voucher (commonly referred to as Section 8) applicants fees to submit an application, along with collecting personal information such as social security numbers, credit card information, etc. falsely stating that this information is needed for a credit check to submit an application.  Others falsely advertise that the Housing Choice Voucher waiting list is opened.   This is a scam and could lead to possible identify theft!  Housing Authorities do not charge fees to apply to any of their affordable housing programs! The Housing Authority of the County of San Bernardino’s Housing Choice Voucher waiting list is currently closed. Prospective applicants also do not need to pull credit reports to apply for affordable housing programs.  We urge our current and future program residents/participants and partners to be aware of these types of scams.
